Every once in a while, even if you tend towards thinner yarn weights, you need to search for a crochet hat pattern for bulky yarn so you can make something fast for a gift or even just for the satisfaction of completing a project. Here we are with the Bulky Fan Beanie! This beanie pattern works up quickly with a classic style. Make it with your favorite team colors for those fall and winter sports so you can stay warm and cheer on your favorite team. I designed this pattern to be a quick and easy make in less than 2 hours project. It has a little bit of texture and color changing, but it’s mostly single crochet and half double crochet, so it’s really a great beginner pattern as well.
This pattern is designed with four sizes, child to adult large. I generally design for a full range of sizes from baby to adult, but with this bulky yarn, the hats for little ones tend to be harder to work with and they don’t have the same style. This pattern has a zero ease instead of negative ease, so if you wanted it to be a tighter fit, you may want to work down a size, or use a smaller hook.
The Red Heart Soft Essentials yarn I used for this design is discontinued (how rude!) but you could use some substitutes like another favorite of mine, Lion Brand Hue + Me or Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes. Post a comment or send me a message on social media if you know of a better substitute. I loved the color selection on the Red Heart yarn and though these substitutions are good yarns, they aren’t good for representing team colors. I was just in Michael’s yesterday looking for a good bulky acrylic yarn that isn’t blanket yarn or chenille and I was quite disappointed! I like Crochet.com’s Brava acrylic yarn and they have a bulky version. I haven’t tried it but they have some good colors! Maybe I’ll throw some in my cart and try it next time I place an order.
This is not my first crochet hat pattern for bulky yarn! I have two other beanie designs with bulky yarn and they are both on opposite ends of the design spectrum. The Blustery Beanie is a highly textured, striped pattern that I really love. The matching cowl for this one is spectacular as well, if I do say so myself! The Chill Stopper Beanie is a simple, worked flat beanie that is an even faster make than today’s design!
The Bulky Fan Beanie was designed for the Chills and Thrill Blog Hop begin hosted by Tasha at Stardust Gold Crochet! It’s a fun blog event featuring a mix of cold weather and spooky patterns! Thank you Tasha for having me!

Finish off, then leave a long tail to sew around the opening to close it. I like to then sew back and forth across the top a couple of times to make sure that seam is tight. Then, leave the rest of the tail to help attach a pom pom or cut the tail. Weave in the rest of the ends.
Pom Pom: I use the Clover Pom Pom maker to make my pom poms! I think it does a great job. I like to use dental floss to tie them at the end to make them the absolute tightest that I can. If you don’t have one, you can absolutely use some cardboard cut into two donut shapes. Follow a YouTube tutorial for that! Leave two long strands of yarn or floss to attach to the beanie.
Two tips for making poms is use nice, sharp scissors, and wrap with two strands of yarn so it takes less time to make.
I hope you loved making this crochet hat pattern for bulky yarn! It’s an easy make and so much fun to work up the different color combinations.

I just wanted you to know that your “get the pattern “button is not working for this pattern.
I so wanted to get the pattern but with no code and the button not working I don’t see a different way to do so.
I just thought you would like to know because this is a big day for you and your pattern.

Hi! I want to let you know that I was able to fix it, it must have taken an hour to update properly on the web. If you weren’t able to come back over the weekend and download it, I’ve kept it live and there is a ravelry code there as well that will be good through end of day Tues, 10/27. Thanks!
